2009 Gelbvieh Group Breedplan Ebvs Released
The 2009 Gelbvieh Group BREEDPLAN EBV's have been released. Check the online herdbook to see how your animals updated EBV's and accuracies look. Worth mention for the 2009 EBV run are two new Calving Ease Traits (A positive figure is favourable). Calving figures are important to consider especially when selecting a heifer bull for your 2009 spring breeding season. They are also a valuable tool to predict females with a pedigree for unassisted deliveries. |

Inaugural NSW Gelbvieh Bull Sale Topper
The inaugural Excel Genetics/Macquarie stud's sale, NSW had a top price of $9,000. ![]() Above is a photo of Excel Genetics principal Geoff Steinbeck (centre), and Landmark Tamworth auctioneers, Ben Goodman and Mark Haywood, with the top priced, $9000 bull, 'Excel Cassidy' after the sale in Dungowan. Here is an extract from a full sale report in the SA Stock Journal, June 23 2009 issue by Neil Lyon. Gelbvieh bulls sold to a top of $9000 and Angus sires made to $5000 at the recent inaugural Excel Genetics and Macquarie Gelbvieh sale at Dungowan near Tamworth and South Australian buyers were right up there in the action. The top-priced black Gelbvieh bull was purchased in partnership by stud breeders John and Rebeka Gommers, Wychwood Gelbvieh, Keith, and Mark and Di Hodgens, Canunda Gold Gelbvieh, Millicent. Mr Gommers said they had had their eyes on the bull, Excel Cassidy by JRI Extra Exposure, since visiting Excel Genetics in April. "We held a female sale in April at which Geoff Steinbeck bought females and when I delivered those females I looked through his bulls and was really impressed with that bull," he said. "I thought he was one of the best sons of Extra Exposure I had seen anywhere, including the US." Spirited bidding saw a 96 per cent clearance of 24 sires. The Steinbeck family's Excel Genetics, Dungowan, sold nine Gelbvieh bulls for an average of $4400 and the Burton family's Macquarie Gelbvieh, Dubbo, sold five out of six sires for an average of $3900. The catalogue offering of eight Angus bulls went for an average of $3375 and a single Balancer (Gelbvieh/Angus) sire made $3500. Landmark Tamworth auctioneer, Ben Goodman, said it was an extremely good sale with prices reflecting the quality of the bulls offered. "The bulls went mainly to commercial buyers looking to gain a European advantage without making their cattle too hard, but retaining the muscling," he said. "The sale bulls will only get better over the next two years because you can see from the draft of bulls coming on in the paddock they will get even better." For more information contact Geoff Steinbeck: 0427 056 017 or John Gommers: 0418 813 191. Visit the Excel website: http://excelgenetics.com.au |

Summit Gelbvieh Inaugural Bull Sale
The Summit Gelbvieh sale, WA sold their top priced bull, Summit 'Huck Finn' (RFPPC0103) sold for $14,000. ![]() Above is a photo of the $14,000 top price Gelbvieh bull sold at Summit stud's inaugural bull sale. Pictured are Clare Pugh (left), buyer Phil Tomlinson, Albany, Landmark Albany southern regional manager Bob Pumphrey, Summit principals John and Kim Pugh, Alexandra and Ed Riggall, and Harriet Pugh. Here is an extract of the story courtesy of the WA Farm Weekly Thursday, March 19 2009 issue by Travis King. The inaugural Summit Gelbvieh stud on-property sale was a resounding success with a top price of $14,000 and only one bull out of 51 offered not selling. Summit principals, the Pugh family, and buyers were all a little unsure of what to expect from the sale, with it marking the first time a significant number of Gelbvieh composite cattle were auctioned in WA. A line-up of 16 pure Gelbvieh was warmly appreciated by the crowd, with the quality of the bulls an indication they would find good demand. And that was certainly the case with a 100pc clearance of all the Gelbvieh bulls for a $5281 average and a $14,000 top price. When it came to the offering of Red Gelbvieh composites, Grey Gelbvieh composites and Black Gelbvieh composites, it was a case of how prospective buyers would accept the concept. Summit principal John Pugh said he was confident of the composite breeding performance, having extensively benchmarked it both in the Summit commercial herd of 4000 breeders, and against other breeds in the family’s 10,000 head feedlot at Three Springs. Acceptance, however, was never a problem with 14 Red composite bulls offered and sold for a $4780 average and $8000 top price, 15 Grey composites offered and sold to a top of $5750 and a $4050 average and six Black composites offered with five sold to a top of $3500 and a $2900 average. All up the 50 bulls sold under the hammer for a gross of $226,750 and a $4535 average. Landmark Albany southern regional manager Bob Pumphrey said the sale was outstanding. “There were quality bulls right throughout the catalogue and buyers came from all over the state,” Mr Pumphrey said. “It was a pleasing sale overall with a good average price, a near total clearance and it was well supported by the Landmark network.” The top price bull was catalogued as lot four and was a truly awesome representative of the Gelbvieh breed. With a deep coat colour, fine skin and excellent muscling, Summit Huck Finn would have been well suited to any number of breeding programs. His eye muscle area (EMA), scanned on February 27, 2009, was an incredible 151cm2, and was described by Landmark auctioneer John Wirth as the biggest he had ever seen. As a yearling Finn’s EMA had measured 105cm2 - a good sign of the future potential of the bull. The fully polled bull had attracted much pre-sale interest on the show circuit, but it was two commercial breeders who fought it out to take him home. In the end Phil Tomlinson, Albany, won the contest, beating off the Tester family, Boyup Brook. Mr Tomlinson said he had never used a Gelbvieh bull before, but after selling a large commercial cattle and cropping operation at Munglinup, and downsizing to a smaller holding at Albany he was keen to trial a different breed over his Angus cow herd. “This bull’s progeny will be compared to progeny by the top price Blonde d’Aquitaine bull we bought at the recent Supreme bull sale,” he said. “I am really chasing muscle to use in a crossbreeding program and it will be interesting to see how this bloke’s calves turn out.” Finn was a late April-drop calf, sired by Ebony Lodge Freedom Fighter X24 and out of Summit Berry Z2. He had a P8 fat measurement of 2mm, a rib fat of 2mm, an IMF of 2.4 and weighed in at 896kg. The Pugh family had collected semen from him for use in their stud and the bull was sold on a three-quarter share and possession to the buyer basis. Second top price in the Gelbvieh section was $7000 paid by WC & BE & DC Avery, Nannup, for Summit Free Spirit (P). Free Spirit was a son of JRI PLD Free Agent and out of Summit Roxy W35. This was a notable pedigree with Roxy the supreme exhibit at the 2002 Brunswick Heifer show. The Pugh family would like to thank all buyers and visitors for their support at the inaugural on-property sale last week. We wish them every success with their purchases and hope for more rewarding and profitable times for them in the future. Beef 2009 & AGM, Rockhampton QLD
The Gelbvieh breed had a terrific showing of animals at Beef 2009 plus two trade stalls in the Durack pavilion. There were many Gelbvieh breeders in attendance, including members and breeders from every state including WA. Special mention must go to Michelle Fleming and family, WA Gelbvieh breeders from Glendale Stud, Serpentine WA. Glendale took out the coveted ANZ National Beef Carcase Competition Award - for the 'Champion individual carcase' and the 'highest scoring pen' across all classes for the Beef 2009! ![]() Above is a photo of the Gelbvieh steer prior to the carcase competition. This was particularly special for the breed as the champion individual was a pure Gelbvieh steer. The steers chosen had just the right fat cover and yield the judges were looking for. For a more indepth review of Gelbvieh show results and photos, please check out this news story: Click Here. For BEEF 2009 official results see: Click Here. Here are the results of the Beef 2009 Gelbvieh competition: Grand Champion Bull - Midas Collosus C2 Exhibited by Chris & Julie Braithwaite Midas Gelbvieh Stud Murgon. Grand Champion Female - Norolle Lady in Red B44 Exhibited by Clyde & Alison Johnson Norolle Cattle Company Millmerran. Congratulations to all who exhibited and took cattle to Beef 2009, it was a strong line up and all animals exhibited were of a high standard and prepared very well. What a wonderful job you did promoting the breed. A big thank you to all who contributed and also thank you to Malcolm King and John Whitbread for your time on council. Some important news from the meeting from ABRI was that for the first year ever a calving ease EBV will be generated in the 2009 Gelbvieh Group BREEDPLAN run. The calving ease EBV will prove important for commercial and stud breeders a like to identify top performers in their participating herds. Gelbvieh prove giant killer at Sydney RAS 2009
With only four Gelbvieh exhibited from two exhibitors at Sydney Royal Easter show 2009 it was amazing the result the small number of cattle had amongst the competition. Gelbvieh took on the might of the Angus and Charolais exhibits with almost 200 Charolais head shown and a significant number of Angus. Gelbvieh were narrowly beaten for the interbreed pair but a Gelbvieh bull was awarded the coveted Interbreed champion Bull at the 2009 Royal Easter Show.
MIDAS COLLOSUS C002 Pictured above was judged the best bull on the grounds of all breeds and he is from the Midas Gelbvieh Stud from Murgon, Queensland. Owner Chris Braithwaite was ecstatic with the win and says "it is a good lead-in to next month's Beef 2009 Expo at Rockhampton". Also worthy of a mention was the supreme Gelbvieh exhibit of the show, the cow NOROLLE LADY IN RED B44 exhibited by the Norolle Gelbvieh Stud from Millmerran, QLD. NOROLLE LADY IN RED B44 by JRI Extra Exposure is a tremendous looking red daughter who shows a lot of promise and is set to do very well during Beef 2009 and Brisbane Ekka this year. All reports commend a formidable combination of Collosus and Lady in Red exhibited as the Gelbvieh Interbreed pair taking out third place. 2008 Western Australia Gelbvieh tour
In September this year a group of Gelbvieh breeders from the Eastern states flew to the West to join their WA Gelbvieh breeding collegues on a grand tour of WA. The trip was a great success with many happy dinners, and great tales to be told. A round up of the trip is available below courtesy of Mr Viv Vinicombe from Glendale Gelbvieh Stud, Serpentine, WA. Gelbvieh Members Tour of West Australian Studs, Viv Vinicombe. Members of the Federal Council of The Australian Gelbvieh Association and other interested members took part in a 2000 km.tour of West Australian Studs from 16th to 19th September. This tour was made possible after many months of preparation by two West Australian younger members in Councillor Alexandria Pugh of the Summit Gelbvieh Stud Narrikup and Michele Fleming of the Glendale Gelbvieh Stud of Serpentine. Day One saw the group off to an early start departing the Bel Eyre Motel in Redcliffe at 7.15 am. travelling to Moora for morning tea and then on to Morowa to the Mowag Gelbvieh Stud at the WA College of Agriculture, where the group enjoyed a midday meal. Following lunch they were taken on a short tour to inspect the stud cattle and their Gelbvieh's entered in the Perth Royal Show. Travelling on to Three Springs they then visited the Nebru Plains Feedlot. This feedlot with a capacity for 12000 head was only partially occupied with several hundred Angus and Wagyu cross cattle being fed for the Jap Ox market .This huge operation , run by the Pugh family, was an insight into the logistics involved in running a large feedlot .The show team were inspected in the yards and then John took the group out to the paddocks to see the Gelbvieh cross cows and calves and later the Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh Cross bulls. After a break for afternoon tea at the homestead, with sweeping views of the countryside, it was on the road again back to Moora for a late dinner at the Moora Hotel. Day two looked like being a wet one because the further south we travelled the wetter it got. Luckily when we arrived at the Murdoch Stud the rain had eased. Kim Thomas , the farm manager at Murdoch University , first came in contact Gelbvieh's when he was working at Morowa Agricultural College some years ago.Kim gave the group a comprehensive run down on his role as farm manager and the need to rotate the animals being used by the vet students for hands on training. With 200 acres on which to run livestock it means that the students have no need to travel when getting practical experience with all farm yard species as well as horses.Another interesting aspect was the flock of sheep on sight that are being used by Murdoch University Medical Research Scientists working on a cure for muscular dystrophy. An interesting group of various breeds of steers being prepared for the "Royal" were seen as well as some stud cows ,calves and a heifer. After a short run to Serpentine to the Glendale Gelbvieh Stud of Barry and Michele Fleming ,Michele took the visitors out to see the Gelbvieh cows and calves and the herd bulls .They also saw their yearling sale bulls.Meanwhile Muriel and Viv Vinicombe who were travelling with the group prepared a BBQ lunch. It was then on to Manjimup Motel for the meal and overnight stay. Next day commenced with a short run out to Alan and Sue Kelly's Braeside Gelbvieh Stud where the herd of stud cows, calves and bull were all placed in a convenient paddock for inspection. Shortly after leaving Braeside the strong winds and rain caught up with us as we travelled to Kojonup and the Crystal Ridge Stud of Steve and Marion Magini. Here it was evident that the long dry spell in August had taken it's toll on the pastures but the cattle were holding up in condition very well.Rain squalls and wind hampered the in paddock livestock inspection but we were able to have a good look at the yarded yearling bulls. After a BBQ lunch it was then that the group took some time out to have a quick look at some orchids and other wildflowers in bushlands. Albany was the next port of call and although the weather was not kind the visitors got a brief look at Princess Royal Harbour and the Southern Ocean from the War Memorial on Mt. Clarence.Returning to the Porongorups for the evening meal and over night accommodation. On Friday morning we visited the home property of the Pugh Family's Summit Gelbvieh Stud at Narrikup. This beautiful property ,with views to the Stirling Ranges,is home to the largest Gelbvieh stud in Australia. Here John took everyone on an extensive tour inspecting the various groups of cattle pointing out the various different bloodlines. With the bleak weather it was comforting to move inside where the state president Steve Magini conducted the formalities of thanks to the visiting Eastern State members for their participation in the tour and for their interest in our cattle. He also thanked all WA members who participated in the tour and aspecially all those who had helped organise and run the event.Following on from this there was an informal discussion relative to the future development and promotion of the Gelbvieh Breed in Australia. Following this Kim and John treated all to an enjoyable midday meal.We then departed for the return trip to Redcliffe and the Bel Eyre Motel. In summary from my point of view and might I assume from other West Australian members point of view it was most gratifying that the visitors were motivated to make the effort and to take the time to come over and see the situation here in WA.It was wonderful to meet these members and to put a face to the people we have been dealing with for some time and to make new friends. Whilst spending much time travelling it was a great opportunity have extensive discussions and to get an understanding of the issues facing our Eastern State friends. Thanks to all the WA members who participated in the tour and for their hospitality, it was great to see Gelbvieh thriving over West. A special thank you to Viv Vinicombe (father) and Michele Fleming (daughter) for making everyone so welcome on your farm and the tour, and thank you for the in-depth review on the WA trip. Ekka 2008 (Story, Courtesy QLD Website)
EKKA 2008, Brisbane Royal Show was another outstanding event for Gelbvieh. Photos of the winning stock can be viewed on the QLD website on their "news" page. QUEENSLAND ROYAL SHOW - THE EKKA 2008 “Chris and Julie Braithwaite’s Midas Gelbvieh Stud had won Champion Female twice before at the Queensland Royal, but the Champion Bull broad ribbon has eluded them - until this year. The stud based in Murgon, finally snagged the big one with 814kg, 16 month old bull, Midas Collosus C002, boasting an EMA of 129 sq cm. Mr Braithwaite said the bull had previously won the 12 to 14 month age class at this year’s Sydney Royal Show. He has been a good calf from day one, and is a full brother to the Reserve Champion from 2007, Midas Brutus, Mr Braithwaite said. Judge, Erica Halliday, Walcha, NSW agreed, describing him as an ideal animal to target a number of markets, with his thickness, structural correctness and “lovely sire appeal”. Reserve Champion Bull went to 578kg, 13 month old bull, Weetalabah HB Cookie, exhibited by the Nixon family (Julie and Aderian Nixon) Chinchilla. The Chaplin family (Glen and Madonna Chaplin) of Sunshine Gelbvieh Cooroy, won Champion Female with their 33 month old Sunshine Diamond Girl A01 with a thumping six month old calf at foot. Midas Gelbvieh tasted success again, taking out Reserve Champion Female with their 17 month old heifer, Midas Callista C001. The trophy for Most Successful Exhibitor went to the Sunshine Gelbvieh Stud.” Qld Branch donates the $50 trophy for Most Successful Exhibitor. |

2008 Gelbvieh National Sale & Dinner Report

The 2008 National Gelbvieh Sale and dinner was a considerable success given the teething problems that can be associated with new events. However the pre-sale dinner and the subsequent National sale were both very strongly supported with a better than expected attendance at both. NATIONAL GELBVIEH SALE - DINNER (Story, courtesy Qld Branch Website) The Gelbvieh “get together” pre-sale dinner at the Jackie Howe Motel in Warwick on Thursday evening, 24 July 2008, was well attended with 43 guests enjoying a great meal and good fellowship. New QLD Gelbvieh Website!
The QLD Gelbvieh Branch have been very busy lately with the design and development of their new state branch website. I think you'll agree the finished product is a grand accomplishment, so congratulations to those involved, you should be proud. It is a good benchmark for the other states to do similar sites for their state members. Reports back say that the interest and feedback they receive are well worth the effort, and they do receive plenty of enquiries which help with communications amongst their members and this helps with the sale of stock and promotion of the breed in co-ordination with state sales and shows. Cameron picks a winner, latest update from Ebony Lodge stud.
![]() With only three steers to choose from Cameron selected this purebred Gelbvieh steer to have a go at winning the Pakenham Hoof and Hook competition. Win he did. Cameron has been keen to enter an animal in the Pakenham (VIC) Hoof and Hook competition ever since he accompanied me when I judged there three years ago. It is a very tough competition to win as you are competing against lot feeders who feed cattle on a contract basis for Woolworths and Coles and are selecting from hundreds if not thousands of steers. Undaunted by this Cameron entered his eight month old Gelbvieh steer. There were nine animals in his section representing Limousin, Belgian Blue, Simmental, Charolais and Angus crosses. Cameron won his class with the Judge commenting on the soft fleshing and thickness over the spine with an even fat cover. Gelbvieh was awarded Reserve Champion. This created a lot of discussion amongs the many cattlemen watching the judging and a number of them were asking for more information on Gelbvieh cattle. The Carcase section of the competition followed two days later. Walking into the chillers to look at the carcases nobody knew who had won until we saw the carcases with the ribbons on. After identifying our carcase from the kill numbers Cameron was beside himself with yet another first prize. If there was ever any doubt about Gelbvieh cattle hanging up it has been put to rest yet again by EBONY LODGE who continue to dominate Hoof and Hook competitions throughout Southern Australia. At eight months straight off mum with only silage supplement the steer had 5 mm fat with a 90cm EMA and scored 3 for marbling. The steers that narrowly beat him had been on grain for 120 - 150 days. 2008 Sydney Royal Easter Show results put Gelbvieh out in front
![]() The Gelbvieh judge, Mr Andrew Green, Uranquinty, sashes the grand champion Gelbvieh Bull, Magnus Lexus, held by owner Doug Roberts DKR stud, Narromine. Mr Roberts and his wife, Kristy bought Lexus as a calf at foot two and a half years ago and have since shown him at the Beef Spectacular, Dubbo where he was reserve senior champion. Mr Roberts said Lexus gained an extra 48 kilograms between then and Sydney (in less than a month) which gave him the edge to clean up at Sydney. In 2007 Mr Roberts picked up senior champion, grand champion and was in the top eight in the interbreed competition. He said winning the competition this year took him by surprise. “I totally wasn’t expecting it, particularly with the calibre of the junior bulls,” he said. “The junior bull I beat was sired by a bull that was voted the best bull in Australia in 2006 out of 3500 judged. “So it was an unexpected and exciting achievement.” Mr Roberts has been running a Gelbvieh stud for three years but has more than 25 years’ experience with cattle from work on a family farm. “I’d known about the Gelbvieh breed for a long time,” he said. “I bought my first bulls off Retreat Gelbvieh stud in Narromine and I got my first best results in the Dubbo vealer market.” He was commercially cross breeding Angus with Gelbvieh bulls for their hybrid vigour and weight gain. “The breed has a lower fat score and higher muscle cattle, still with a softness and doability,” he said. “It’s personally satisfying in trying to achieve the best and breed the best that we can. “The national Gelbvieh bull sale is in July in Warwick so hopefully this accolade will help the bull achieve his best value on the day.” Mr Roberts also won best exhibit for the breed and senior champion. A Gelbvieh bull called "Double J Zulu" is the interbreed supreme male champion at Australia's biggest stud cattle competition. Equally happy was exhibitor B. Duke whose Charolais cow "Advanced Liberty Y73" was awarded surpeme female champion. There were over 2,000 stud cattle across 33 breeds in the competition. The event lasted two days and was the biggest stud competition ever held in Australia. Despite the logistics of running such a huge event, everyone had a fantastic time, but most excited was Michael Jackson who bred the Interbreed winner "Double J Zulu". In the Bos indicus competition. D. Olive and M. Abbott won both the Grand Champion Bull and Female with Demaure Commando and Demaure Elegance repectively. Bandeeka Gelbvieh Stud, WA Dispersal
Monday, 08/05/2006 SOUTH Australian Gelbvieh breeders, the Gommers family, Wychwood stud, Murray Bridge bought the top price bull at the Bandeeka Gelbvieh stud dispersal at Boyanup, in Western Australia, last week. The Gommers family paid $5600 for Bandeeka's main stud sire, Ebony Lodge Freehold The growing popularity of the Gelbvieh breed in the Australian cattle industry was on show after a highly successful dispersal of the A black Gelbvieh cow topped the sale at $6100, while an eight month old heifer calf sold to $4500 to top the stud calf offering. Established in 1991 by Tony and Loreen Kitchen and Mike and Lorraine Eastman, the Bandeeka stud was one of Australia's oldest Gelbvieh studs and its investment in quality genetics over the years attracted a number of studs from across Australia to participate in the sale, and what the studs didn't buy, commercial breeders snapped up.
