The dam of this bull, DLW 408P, also has an Australian connection, as her previous bull calf, DLW Wardon 24W, is currently being used by a number progressive Australian Gelbvieh breeders. DLW Investment 422Y will be offered for sale at the annual Warner Beef Genetics sale on the 6th March, whilst the TAU 271Y bull will be offered for sale at the annual Taubenheim sale on the 6th February.

Held annually during the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo., the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale was the first beef cattle sale of the NWSS. With at total gross of $212,000, the average for the 2012 sale was a 20 percent increase over last year's sale, and a 75 percent increase from the sale two years ago.
The high-selling lot of the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale was Lot 1 at $22,500, the 2012 Breeder's Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity champion. Bred by Plateau Gelbvieh, Peetz, Colo., PLA Big Dog 101Y is a January 29, 2011 purebred son of HYEK Black Impact 3960N. He is homozygous polled, double black and boasts a tremendous EPD profile of: CE 107; BW 0.8; WW 47; YW 81; Milk 18; CW 21; RE 0.23; CV 21.84 and FM 10.42. The second high-seller of the day was Lot 10 at $20,000. This was the pick of the 2011 bull or heifer crop from Bar Arrow Cattle Company, Phillipsburg, Kan. Flying H Genetics, Arapahoe, Neb., was the winning bidder. Bar Arrow Cattle Company showed the grand champion Pen of 5 Gelbvieh bulls and reserve grand champion Pen of 3 Balancer bulls at the 2012 National Western Stock Show.
Lot 5 was the sale of 50 percent cloning right on the black, homozygous polled, purebred donor dam EGL G565, consigned by Boehler Gelbvieh, Orleans, Neb. Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, S.D., and Judd Ranch, Inc., Pomona, Kan., purchased the 50 percent cloning rights for $13,000.
Wes and Brittney Spencer, Pierre, S.D., offered 50 percent, lifetime embryo interest on BEA Cindy Lou Who 0001X ET as an added lot to the sale. This double polled, purebred donor female is an ET full sister to Beastrom Ranch's $24,000 2011 National Champion Bull, BEA Passion 001X ET, and the many time champion JCGR BAR GT Ella 265X. Hart Farm, Kansas City, Kan., and Scott Bachman, Chillicothe, Mo., teamed up to purchase this lot at $13,000.
Little Windy Hill Farms, Max Meadows, Va., consigned Lot 2, LWHF Premium Balance 462Y. He is a homozygous black, homozygous polled Balancer bull. This bull was a runner-up in the 2012 People's Choice Balancer Bull Futurity and reserve champion winter bull calf in the 2012 National Balancer Show the day after the sale at the NWSS. Malm Ranch, Albin, Wyo., and SS Ranch, LaGrange, Wyo., teamed up to purchase full possession and 2/3 semen interest for $12,000
Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, Gladstone, N.D., purchased the pick of the 2010 bred heifers at Beastrom Ranch, Pierre, S.D. Beastrom Ranch has produced many outstanding AI sires and donor females, producing cattle that offer consistency, power and performance combined with strong maternal traits and balanced EPDs. At the fall of the gavel, this added lot sold for $10,000.
Judd Ranch, Inc., consigned Lot 3, JRI Trump 270W13B. This coming three-year-old herd sire prospect is a homozygous polled, red purebred Gelbvieh bull. He was purchased for $9,500 by Lazy TV Ranch, Selby, N.D., and Kal-Kota Ranch, Steele, N.D., for full possession and one-half semen interest. The day after the sale, this bull was named the 2012 reserve grand champion national Gelbvieh bull.
The National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale is sponsored by the American Gelbvieh Association and managed by Cattlemen's Connection, Hiawatha, Kan. The American Gelbvieh Association would like to recognize Judd Ranch, Inc., and Jumping Cow Gelbvieh, Ramah, Colo., for sponsoring the meal prior to the sale.

Photos taken at the field day where over twenty stud and commercial

"The Future of Gelbvieh in Victoria"

updated "The Future of Gelbvieh in Victoria"

Gelbvieh breeders, stud and commercial, came together on 25th June at Neerim South on the property of Col and Leanne Flanagan, to cement the future of the breed in Victoria.

An enthusiastic group listened intently to the expertise of Annette Walker and Larry Cutler who presented informative sessions on marketing, promotion and competitions.

A farm walk followed to view a selection of the "Neerim View" herd and discuss topics such as genetics, breeding programs, animal selection and market requirements.

A meeting followed and those present were enthusiastic about re-activating and expanding the Victorian Gelbvieh Branch which has been in recess for several years.   Positive contributions from all present resulted in a list of new initiatives and ideas to be researched and implemented.

Junior development was high on the list and the meeting felt that we must encourage and support our juniors, as they are the future of the breed and the industry.  To this end it was decided that we join with juniors from neighboring regions to establish junior programmes and events.

The meeting then elected a committee consisting of  Chairman - Col Flanagan,  Vice Chairman - Denis Dobson, Secretary - Cameron Cutler and Treasurer - Ted Hazlett, to lead the activities of the Branch.

The day was completed when a vote of thanks was passed to Col & Leanne for hosting the field day and the work they had done to make it such a success.

NEERIM VIEW CATTLE TURN HEADS AT FARMWORLD

updatedNEERIM VIEW CATTLE TURN HEADS AT FARMWORLD

Picture from left to right {Max Smart, Col Flanagan, Steph Flanagan, Josh Flanagan, Leanne Flanagan and farm manager Cameron Cutler leading Neerim View Gwen (5 months)

There is a saying associated with Farm world, “It always rains on the first day of Farmworld” and it lived up to this once again with 30ml of rain falling on the first day, we also got showers on 2 out of the next 3 days make things very damp this year at Farm world.
The weather was truly indicative of the tremendous season being experienced in the southern parts of Australia this year, spirits are high and subsequently large crowds came through the gates.

Optimises appear to be on the move with beef breeders as enquiries for cattle were simply over the top, for all types of cattle. Neerim View had on display three Gelbvieh heifers in addition to three Red Angus heifers which was the first outing for the stud.

Utilising the Ebony Lodge site at Farmworld resulted in many old and new clients dropping in having a cuppa and meeting new Farm Manager Cameron Cutler. All but two of the breeding age bulls being offer for sale this year have gone to new homes since Farmworld with many more inspections arranged in the coming weeks.

There was strong interest in any females and semen packages to establish small studs in the local area. Stud principle Col Flanagan was very happy with the level of enquiry. “This year we wanted people to understand the advantages of using Gelbvieh in their herds, and if they weren’t already using Gelbvieh, then why not”? Gelbvieh are the second most popular European breed in the USA and our genetics are derived from this very strong base.  This breed is beginning to establish in our local markets as many sales in Gippsland since Christmas have been topped by Gelbvieh cross cattle, the latest being a pen of Gelbvieh X Hereford steers topping at $2.80/kg lw in Bairnsdale.

Paringa Livestock Bull Sale Results

updated Gelbvieh infused bulls to $7500

Gelbvieh infused bulls to $7500

Gelbvieh infused "Stabilizer" bulls sold to a top of $7500 to average $4000 at the recent Paringa Livestock bull sale held at Yea in Victoria on the 23rd March, 2011. Bulls sold to a wide area, from Rockhampton, West Wyalong, Ariah Park, Gippsland, central Victoria and local areas.

A most interesting sale was the Lot 63 bull, Paringa E472, an ET son of FHG Sculptor 107S out of a tremendous purebred Lawsons Angus cow, who sold to the Falkland Islands Department of Agriculture, to be used in their national beef herd improvement program. Commenting on the purchase, Mac McArthur, Senior Agricultural Advisor, Department of Agriculture, Falkland Islands Government said........................

"E472 visually exhibits all the characteristics we are looking for here to raise young beef to finish about 2 yo under what can only be described as harsh conditions, particularly during late winter and spring when cattle are rising 2yo. Seeing all the Stabilizer bulls at Yea with Don and Tom Lawson, I was most impressed with the muscling, large testicle size and quiet easy going nature of the Gelbvieh infused bulls. As a Churchill Fellow studying bull progeny testing, I spent time in 1977 with John Stewart-Smith in Canada who was developing the Beef Booster maternal and terminal composites. I also spent time at Clay Centre with the scientists that were involved with the major crossbreeding program and recall that Gelbvieh genes were looking good in some crosses".

Paringa Stabilizer E472 is currently undergoing health testing before semen collection for the Falkland Islands. The bull will remain in Australia.

The high selling bull at $7500 was Paringa E474, is also an ET son of FHG Sculptor 107S, this time out of a GAR Yield Grade cow, who sold to the Joyce family at Pakenham. Well know ex AGA board member John Gross was keen to reintroduce some Gelbvieh genetics into his commercial Angus herd, and he purchased a son of Sculptor and a son of Morgiana Exposure A09 for a $5000 top.

The Jeffries family of Ariah Park in the Riverina purchased four bulls for a $3250 average. Commenting on his purchases, Glen Jeffries said "I purchased three purebred Gelbvieh bulls from Chris Davison eight years ago to breed some real maternal, half breed cows. We returned four years later and purchased three black GV x AN hybrid bulls from him to mate to the daughters of the original purebred bulls we had purchased. These cattle are meeting all our expectations, so we are back again, and have purchased another four black bulls as the next step in our program"

West Wyalong vetinerary surgeon and cattle breeder Geoff Boal purchased Paringa E458, a son of Exposure A09 for $4000. "I have cross bred cows, and the calves from my two previous Gelbvieh composite bulls have been tremendous. I am not in a position to retain the heifer calves, and sell them all the calves directly to the local feedlot, and he just loves the way these cattle perform"

Commenting on the sale, Paringa principal Tom Lawson said ..... "Building a new market for our black Stabilizer bulls will take time. The feedback on last years bulls has been excellent, with the calving ease being a real surprise for most breeders. Our Gelbvieh infused bulls are really impressive, and we are now mating their sisters to SimmAngus genetics as the next step in our program. We are really excited about the future of our Stabilizers"

2010 LAUNCESTON ROYAL SHOW RESULTS FOR GELBVIEH

updated 2010 LAUNCESTON ROYAL SHOW

2010 LAUNCESTON ROYAL SHOW RESULTS

Gelbvieh wins Senior Champion Interbreed Bull at Launceston Royal Show

At last weeks Launceston Royal the Gelbvieh breed was again represented
with a team from Gelbvieh Tasmania of Denis and Tim Dobson, after an
absence of  several years.
Macquarie Dekal headed up a strong team and at 26 months and weighing
998 kg took out the Senior Interbreed bull title, missing out on Supreme
bull by just one vote to the eventual Supreme exhibit.
Gavin O'Brien from Orange NSW, Charolais judge and one of the interbreed
judging panel was full of praise for Dekal. He described him as having
the whole package, plenty of muscle and a good front end with a great
temperament, a kind eye and excellent feet.
The previous days judging resulted in the Gelbviehs making a clean sweep
in the "Any other breeds " section winning all possible championship
ribbons.  The first four Interbreed classes resulted in four third place
ribbons to the Gelbviehs before Dekal claimed a popular win. Also of
note was the interest created by Norolle Shady Lady. In a very strong
Interbreed heifer class, at just 14 months, she was awarded third place
behind two much older and well developed heifers.
It was a success show for the Dobson family as Heath and Samantha's
Charolais stud won the Interbreed breeders group of three head and were
runners up in both the junior and senior interbreed bull classes.

EBONY LODGE DISPERSAL SALE

updated
Ebony Lodge wish to thank all of the cattlemen and women who supported the final sale.
"It has been a great ride" with Gelbvieh from 1989 until now.

It was pleasing to see so many repeat buyers and friends coming along for their last look at the herd that has had such a huge impact on Gelbvieh in Australia. Most of the females were sold to registered breeders although a number of quality females are now in commercial herds. This will make money for the commercial cattlemen who bought them but will impact on female inventory numbers.

We have made many friends in the Gelbvieh breed which will continue long after the cattle are gone. I will continue to follow the breed into the future. All the best for the future from the Cutler family and the Whitbread family.

"EBONY LODGE GELBVIEH COMPLETE DISPERSAL"

After 20 years of leading the way with Australias leading source of performance genetics we have decided to disperse our Gelbvieh.

The dispersal will take place on property and will see some of the legends of the breed in Australia sold. Direct decendants of Gladstone Red Baron ,Heaton Park Leon , JRI Grand Prix 53G , Ebony Lodge Sorento , Ebony lodge Woodstock , Ebony Lodge Whiskey ,Ebony Lodge Freedom X4 , Ebony Lodge Freedom Fighter and Ebony Lodge Bismark as well as A.I sires JRI Extra Exposure , JRI Black n Stacked , Spur Beretta , Big and Rich and Sculptor.

The great cow families of MADELINE , ROSE, ASTER, NICKY, PERFUME, CENTENNIAL, DIAMOND, ROSITA, CHLOE, ALICE AND ADELAIDE will all be sold with generations of proven performance on both sides of the pedigree.

Larry can still be contacted, Phone Larry on 0417 994599. To visit the: Ebony Lodge Website.

PARINGA STABILIZER BULLS SELL TO $9000 TOP, story courtesy of RPL

updated
Gelbvieh / Angus infused Paringa Stabilizer bulls sold to a top price of $9000.00 at the annual Paringa Livestock bull sale at Yea in Victoria on Wednesday 31st March. The black Stabilizer bulls are the result of a joint venture breeding and marketing maternal beef bull program set up by Tom Lawson of Paringa with Chris Davison of Morgiana Beef Composites, to compliment the terminal Paringa Charolais program.

The overall sale results saw 46 Charolais bull sell to $12,000.00 to average $5000.00, 11 Red Angus bulls sold to a top of $7500.00 to average $3590, and 22 out of 23 Gelbvieh sired, Black Stabilizer bulls sold to a top of $9000.00 to average $4166.00. In all, 78 Paringa beef bulls averaged $4576.00, for a sale gross of $357,000.00.

The high selling Stabilizer bull, Paringa Stabilizer D215 was sired by JRI Black n Stacked, and was an ET son of the outstanding cow Lawsons X766, her four sons averaged $6500.00. Two other bulls sold for $8000.00 each, one sired by JRI Black n Stacked and the second by home bred Gelbvieh bull Morgiana Exposure A09. Webster Pastoral of Yea purchased three of the high selling bulls for an average of $7833.00. In sire group averages, 5 JRI Black n Stacked sons averaged $5700.00, 5 JRI Extra Exposure sons averaged $3100.00, 8 sons of Morgiana Exposure A09 averaged $4065, 3 sons of FHG Sculptor 107S averaged $3500.00 and a single son of JBOB Carolina Fortune sold for $2500.00. Buyers came from local areas, Gippsland, Culcairn, Yarrawonga, Jerilderie and East Gresford in the Hunter Valley.

Commenting on the sale, Morgiana Beef Composites principal Chris Davison said:
“This is an excellent start to our program together, and gives us a strong platform to build forward from. With the ever increasing cost / price squeeze in beef production, commercial breeders are looking for breeding options that target improvements in the efficiency levels of their cow herds. The maternal heterosis generated by our Stabilizer bulls allows breeders to move their programs forward to a new level, to produce an efficient and uniform black and polled cow herd that is ideal for the utilization of the Paringa Charolais bulls as terminal sires. We had excellent feedback from breeders, agents and feedlotters that these cattle are right in line with where the industry needs to go, and we are delighted that so many commercial cattle breeders could see the dollars and cents value in the genetic merit of our Stabilizer bulls”
